I posted a blog about this picture a few weeks ago, and have been having second thoughts since. My husband also says he thinks I fell short on the message for this picture, so here I am to try again! My main point about this picture is that while it looks like a fail, it is actually one of my favorite pictures of our grandkids. Wish I could take credit for it, but my talented son took this picture. It has a place of prominence in a frame on my sideboard!
The story behind this picture is of Easter Sunday at Nana & Papa’s house. After handfuls of candy from Easter baskets, an Easter egg hunt and then getting dressed in matching outfits, these cousins had had enough! The sun is in their eyes, causing:
- Naomee, the oldest, to be so blinded that she was crying and throwing her head back with a not-great look on her face. Riley spitting up in her lap didn’t help, lol!
- Evan, second oldest, because of the sun in his eyes, is hiding behind Morgan whose face is red from the heat.
- MK, bless her heart, is contemplating the quickest way down!
This is what happens when you try to force posed pictures on children—utter chaos and even at the best, someone usually has their eyes closed. Let’s look at my most favorite picture of these same children with their Papa, my husband, Rory.
Of course, this is still posed with matching clothing, but here are the differences:
- Obviously, they are 2 years older in this picture and able to be more helpful.
- We used one of our photographer friends who is very talented. He is also very smart at this process. We met in a park and ….
- He let the children run and play and took pictures of them as they did. By the time he was ready for a posed shot, they were used to him and the camera, had all the wiggles out and were very willing to gather around their favorite Papa.
I guess the big share about these pictures is that when you love the subjects, there really is no bad picture. All pictures are memories and sometimes the “bad” ones turn out to be a great memory and a family heirloom!
Here are some other candid shots of my favorite little people—and yes, we have two more little guys now!
That’s the story of my love of family pictures here in my amazing grace filled life……

I love the very first picture so much! It’s a laugh out loud moment, and they all are absolutely adorable. I also love all the other pictures of their beautiful little faces. You are definitely blessed ❤️

I soooo love that picture! Now when they come over and see it blown up in a frame in a spot of prominence, they say, “Nana, don’t you realize this is a bad picture?”. I tell them it is the best picture and my favorite.
